Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Advocacy
What is this course?
The course provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to study legal advocacy from the perspective of Indigenous peoples’ cultures, aspirations and social contexts and use this learning to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities.
Who is this course suited to?
This course is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over 18 years of age who want to develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in many areas of social justice. On a theoretical level it provides a comprehensive introduction to the Australian legal system and the issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within this system.
Graduates of the course will be prepared for work in community-controlled or government organisations, specifically those concerned with the rights and advocacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, as field workers, liaison officers, legal advocates and negotiators.
The course is also suited to those who are interested in their own legal rights and the rights of other members of their community.
Applicants should note that criminal history and integrity checks will be required when gaining employment in government and legal industry organisations.
Tranby receives funding from the Federal Government to support Indigenous non-NSW residents and from the NSW Government to support Indigenous NSW residents. This means that you do not need to pay tuition fees. The availability of ABSTUDY support is based on individual circumstances.
